Although academics have pointed out how such an ability could be a helpful tool helping queer people build community (Shelp, 2003), research fails to demonstrate whether LGBTIQ+ listeners actually have an advantage judging sexual orientation through voice (Fasoli et al., 2023; Daniele et al., 2020; Ruben et al., 2014). Furthermore, the topic is severely understudied in minoritized language communities, like Catalan. This research looks to determine if Catalan speaking communities are able to precisely identify sexual orientation from voice and if certain demographic groups, namely those belonging to the LGBTIQ+ community, demonstrate an advantadge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We conducted a perception test with 193 native Catalan speakers who were asked to judge 40 men\u2019s sexual orientation based on their voice. Listeners were trained with 4 samples of read speech with equal lexical content to focus their attention on the phonetic traits, and then judged the native speakers on a 4-point scale from \u00abheterosexual\u00bb to \u00abhomosexual\u00bb based on a 5-second sample of lexically neutral spontaneous speech. We collected information on the judges\u2019 age, gender, sexual orientation, as well as declared pertinence to the LGBT community and socialization with other LGBT people. The results were analyzed with performance metrics and linear mixed general models in R.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, judges showed an absolute accuracy level above chance (68\u201919%) and demonstrated relative accuracy by consistently judging gay speakers to sound more homosexual than other queer speakers, and both higher than heterosexual speakers. Differences in gender and sexual orientation did not correlate with accuracy, and none the queer groups didn\u2019t outperform the cisheterosexual groups. Our study concludes Catalan speakers share intuitions on what \u00absounding gay\u00bb in Catalan entails and demonstrate an ability to correctly guess sexual orientation from voice.
